Dark Dressers: Renee Ruin
February 25, 2015
Renee Ruin is perhaps one of the first and most influential dark culture bloggers to this day. She sits up there with Dirty Flaws, Twisted Lamb and Haute Macabre. Based in Australia Renee devotes her time to writing, blogging and recently growing a new jewellery line.
What does a typical day in the life of Renee Ruin involve?
An existential crisis and moral debate with the snooze button followed by the morning drive to the day job. I work in publishing mon-friday. I like separating work and art. I enjoy being able to switch off creatively and focus on pragmatic tasks. Then once the work day is over its onwards home. I usually wind up downloading too many tv shows and sitting in front of the computer. I research (code for “internetting”) and work on my blog. I have lists of people, artists, musicians etc that I want to interview and I kind of just keep adding to that list and working my way through completing it. I try to spend as much time as I can writing as well. Writing keeps me relatively sane!
Which are your wardrobe staples and why?
The Leather Jacket is my absolute number #1. I cannot function without it. It completes any outfit and I love the rock edge it brings. Second – Jewellery! I am a huge jewellery hoarder. From rings to necklaces to septum jewellery to harnesses and chokers. Jewellery can really make an outfit and define a style. Boots!! A girl can never have enough boots! Ankle boots, knee boots.. boots boots boots! I also rotate a good number of leather skirts in my wardrobe. A must!
What’s your favourite item in your closet?
My knee high Dr.Marten leather boots without a doubt. They are unique, powerful and dead sexy. You can dress them up or down. I guess to me they are like how some women feel about heels!
How would you describe your personal style?
I’m a rock chick with a black heart. Leather, tees, boots, silver jewellery, black cat eyeliner, faux fur…
Where do you shop?
I shop almost anywhere. If I like it I want it. I do A LOT of shopping online. I usually buy some staple basics like tees etc and then shell out for more unique pieces from independent stores or designers Ive found online or even places like etsy. Style doesn’t have to be about the price tag. Its about the ensemble at the end.
Your style icons?
Alison Mosshart, Courtney Love, Stevie Nicks. Anything Hedi Slimane X Saint Laurent.
Two most important moments that influenced your style?
1. Getting the fuck out of the country and moving to the city!
2. the goddamn 90s
